Sometimes a person does a lot of exercising, sticks to a strict diet, and has no health problems, but still cannot lose weight. You know why? Because it is beneficial.
We gathered 5 great psychological barriers that hinder us from losing unwanted weight, despite a healthy diet and regular training.
Psychological Reasons Not Losing Weight
5. Being Overweight Is Beneficial!
Yes, it is beneficial because we can relate our problems to being overweight:
- No soul mate?
- Is the dream job still far away?
- Unreachable life goals?
It is very convenient to blame the excess weight of our problems because if there were no problems, it would be obvious that the reasons for our problems are within us.
Of course, no one wants to disappoint themselves, which is why our weight does not decrease, even if we regularly visit the gym. Our subconscious does not let it happen.
4. It’s A Great Excuse For Our Own Laziness
We all like to postpone things until the next day, month, or year. Overweight people like to postpone their plans for the next life when they are thin and slim.
It’s a great excuse: “I want to learn to dance, but I can’t because I’m overweight. When I lose weight, I will start training every day and be the star of all parties.”
“Everyone will be jealous! But until now, Thank God, I don’t need to train as much. So I’m going to run a bit at night and go to bed with a calm mind.”
3. It’s A Way To Attract Love And Attention
Who doesn’t like to whine? There are so many people around us who want to console us, take pity on us, love us, and take care of us, and we feel like the center of the universe.
A strict diet and a demanding coach are wonderful reasons for daily whinings. So why lose it?
2. It’s A Way To Escape Unwanted Thoughts And Emotions
Have you noticed that stressed people eat a lot, even if they are on a diet? This is because they cannot perceive their true emotions, especially if they have been taught to hide them from childhood:
“Don’t cry! Don’t complain! You’re an adult now!” That is why a feeling of anxiety is sometimes perceived as another meaning: hunger, for instance.
As a result, instead of visiting a psychotherapist, who can teach them how to manage their emotions, they visit a refrigerator, despite their trainer’s requests.
1. It’s A Way Not To Solve A Self-esteem Problem
Inadequate self-esteem is another psychological obstacle to losing weight. If a person sitting across from a nutritionist likes to repeat words as “my lovely hips,“ ”big cheeks are my style,“ or “more of me to love,” she unconsciously chooses to stay the way she is.
The same statement works with thoughts of inheritance. “My mother was overweight, and so was I.” Well, if you want to continue your family obesity line, it is your choice and there is no need to torture yourself with exercise and diet.
However, scientists claim that inevitable genetic obesity only provides a predisposition to it.
So try to avoid negative biases in your head. If you want to solve a problem, solve it and don’t look back.
As you can see, most of our problems are inside our head. Do you agree? Share your opinion in the comments below.
